GeoVerse®199: Hey Hey Holy Mackerel

While the Chicago Bears may have had the most successful song sung by teammates with their 1985 tune “The Super Bowl Shuffle” that earned the athlete-artists an Emmy nomination. But the Bears were merely mimicking the tradition that was started by the Chicago Cubs a generation earlier when teammates Gene Oliver, Willie Smith and Nate Oliver sang “Hey Hey Holy Mackerel” on the album “Cub Power.” Bleacher Bums and other Cubs players were featured in other songs on “Cub Power” but this song, “Hey Hey Holy Mackerel,” would be the one that started a tradition of teams recording their chest-beating anthem.
